I have a work ethic or habit which I recently realised just doesn’t work for me… I tend to attack all my tasks in big stints. Being a Sagittarian, or perhaps just a ponderer I put off doing things until I have an appropriate amount of time to do them well.
Well, this “time” never seems to come about especially for the tasks which create a sense wellness for myself such as my flute practice or new types of meditation practice. Especially when all my mandatory tasks take precedence like cleaning , washing or paperwork …..
This year has brought me many gifts one in particular was my awakening to the power of baby steps….
The embodiment of this great lesson came when I decided, instead of waiting for a spare half hour where I could sit down to practice my flute. I just began playing it here and there for just 2-5 minutes…
Most unexpectedly I can now play several songs by memory after just 6 months, when normally any new task or project would be dust laden and still waiting for an “appropriate or decent amount time” for it to be attended to.
Taking this lesson in stride I started applying my new wisdom to many aspects of my life and “VOILA” I have managed to keep many wheels simultaneously moving! The epiphany hidden within this old saying is that if you are conscious and apply this rule to the many aspects of your life; it tends to create joy. When you don’t just do and don’t dodge you begin to feel inspired and you stay inspired. Taking constant baby steps builds your feeling of self belief, wellbeing and success. Its really does!
Most of us are familiar with the old cartoon of the a snowball rolling down a mountain…. As it rolls it gets bigger, bigger and bigger. Baby steps are just the same, they build momentum and drive us forward towards achieving our goals. Even if its just a little nudge here and there. Eventually these petite moves begin to alleviate the inertia and a sense of paralysis we all tend to find ourselves in and open up new doors, new ideas and wonderful journeys.
Don’t wait! Take small steps and dream on…..
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step
